Polymer clay is, as the name implies, a pliable, blendable polymer compound for artists and crafters. It's not a true clay - it's a manmade material that remains pliable for long periods, but bakes or "cures" in a conventional oven at fairly low temperatures. You can sculpt it, carve it, stamp it, texture it, sand it, buff it, paint it, and build with it to create almost anything, including jewelry.

Christine Haynes of Upper Marlboro raises awareness about pancreatic cancer as a member of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN).

During Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month in November, Haynes and other PanCAN volunteers nationwide have also organized "Pennies for PanCAN" and distributed posters and pamphlets to increase education about the fourth leading cancer killer in the U.S. for men and women.

In the few months that Haynes has been with the D.C. chapter of the organization, she has raised $500 with her purple ribbon campaign. Businesses sell the purple ribbons, which signify pancreatic cancer, and Haynes collects the proceeds to go towards cancer research and education.

Finding funding for more research is a personal mission for Haynes.

"Pancreatic cancer changed my life forever when my mother, June Fehsenfeld, was diagnosed on Thanksgiving day in 1996," Haynes said. "She passed away just a few weeks later on Dec. 16. We had no idea it would move so fast."

Since her mother's death, Haynes has promoted awareness by passing out informational brochures and advocating for funds to find early detection methods, treatment and ultimately a cure for the disease.

PanCAN is a national, patient-based advocacy organization for the pancreatic cancer community.
